Can hard or soft enamel be used?
There are different methods that can be utilized to add color and the adequate method will depend on your application. Two popular options are hard enamel and soft enamel:
Soft Enamel
Soft enamel is colored epoxy paint that is applied to the recessed areas of the design. After application, the badge is baked to cure the enamel, resulting in a textured finish where you can feel the raised metal edges around the colored areas. Soft enamel is substantially more cost effective than hard enamel.
Hard Enamel
Hard enamel involves filling the recessed areas with melted glass particles and then polishing down to a smooth, flat finish. The result is a durable, premium piece with a sleek and glossy appearance. It is known for its longevity and resistance to fading and scratching. Only a diamond can scratch hard enamel and is the traditional method for manufacturing badges and other decorative pieces such as jewelry. Its origins are in antiquity and has ben around for 1000's of years. Very few manufacturers have the capability to manufacture using this method. Most companies who claim to use "hard enamel" are really using "imitation hard enamel", which is epoxy paint.
