The Electroplating Process For Chrome Decals

Chrome plating augments the appearance and longevity of chrome plated nameplates by electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal or plastic substrate. Below is a brief explanation of the process:

Step 1: Surface Preparation:

Clean and polish the substrate (metal or plastic) to remove contaminants and achieve a smooth, defect-free surface for optimal plating adhesion.

Step 2: Activation and Etching:

Treat the surface with chemical etchants or acids to create microscopic pores and activate it for plating; for plastics, apply an electroless plating layer (usually nickel) to make the surface conductive.

Step 3: Base Metal Plating:

Electroplate a layer of copper onto the activated substrate to enhance conductivity and fill imperfections, followed by a layer of nickel to provide corrosion resistance and a smooth foundation for the chrome layer.

Step 4: Chrome Plating:

Electroplate a thin layer of chromium onto the nickel-plated substrate, giving it a bright, mirror-like finish with added durability and corrosion resistance.

Step 5: Rinsing, Drying, and Quality Inspection:

Rinse the plated parts thoroughly to remove residual chemicals, dry them to prevent water spots, and inspect for defects to ensure they meet quality standards before final finishing or assembly.
